About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I hold a U.S. Passport, does this apply only airport arrival or can it apply to cruise ship port.

I will be arriving to Xian from Yokohama, Japan. Our first port of entry will be Osaka, Japan from 7:00AM to 6:00 PM. then arrive Xiamen, China. Will be in port from 7:00Am till 2:00PM. Am I going to have to get a visa for 7 hours in port???

Laurie, 72 hours free transit is only available for flights no matter how your travel itinerary is. So I am afraid that you can't enjoy 72 hours free transit. By the way, you may specify your itinerary and then I might help you figure out what type you should apply because I am confused by your trip.
