About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

I am an American with student visa to study in Hong Kong. Should I get a China one before I leave?

Or should I get it when I am in Hong Kong? Which should I apply for? I live in Chicago now. Thank you

What is your purpose of visiting mainland? There are several kinds and each is issued for a different purpose. And you'd better apply for it in USA rather than HK, in my view.

You should get a L type for mainland China. The following documents are required: your valid passport and a photocopy of its data page, an application form affixed with a recent taken photo, roundtrip ticktes and hotel reservations.

You should get a mainland visa before going to HK, you can get one in hong kong but the durations and validity are usually shorter. If you apply in America now you are eligable for one valid for 10 years with 90 day stays each time. Hong kong usually only issues 30 day stays valid for 1 year or less
