About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

P - an US citizien living in Hong Kong

I have a US passport, but currently living in Hong Kong. I am planning to visit Shanghai for 3 days during Christmas. I am not sure whether I need to apply for a China entry visa beforehand. Am I eligible for the 72 hours free transit? If not, will I be able to apply for a VOA in Shanghai? Thank you for your advice.

If you fly from HK to Shanghai and then get back to HK, you are not eligible for 72 hours free transit. And there is no VOA for USA citizens. You need to apply for a L type in advance.
