1. If you are in CN now, you can prepare all your requirements and then apply a Q type out of China.
2. The processing time is normally 4 working days, and the duration for Q1 is 30 days, for Q2 less than 180 days.
3. The rules for Q type say that holders can not work with Q type. Since you will study in China for a long time, do you have an X1 type? If you have, you are not suggested to apply for a Q type. if you get the Q type, your X1 type will expire. With X1 type, you can only hunt for parttime jobs with the consent of your university.
4. Q1 is a 30-day visa, you need to change it to a temporary residence permit within 30 days after your arrival. The permit may grant u a stay of one year in general. Then you need to renew it within China.
5. With Q2, you can stay no longer than 180 days, while with Q1, you can stay longer. Q1 is better, so the approval for Q1 is stricter. If you have applied for Q1, to change it to a residence permit, physical examination is needed.
