Dayshia, it wasn't invented by somebody. In my opinion, it was discovered by Zhang Qian and the trademen who followed his route to go between Western Regions and Central China developed the road.

Trade has gone on since Man developed tools. The Road grew up over time as a natural organic expression of trade patterns. It went thru different stages of support and recognition. In a major way the Mongols, after their conquest of China, made it much more accepted as safety was considerably improved by the dominance of the Mongol Empire.
