Hello, I'm a Malaysian studying in Japan. For this coming holiday, I would like to visit my friends in Beijing, stay at his hostel. What should I prepare for my visa application? And, if I want to go to Shanghai afterwards, do I need to apply another permit?

Then you can use the letter, your passport, an application form, a recent taken photo, your resident permit card to apply through a Japan tour agency to visit Beijing. Only a single entry Tourist L is enough for visiting both Shanghai and Beijing.
