About:China Visa Application in USA

I understand there is a new 10 year visa agreement.

Although I won't be going to Beijing until August, 2015, since the it is good for 10 years, is there any reason I can't receive it while I'm in NYC (I live upstate, so it's not always easy to come to the city).

The reason for rejection for a 10-year one is not because of the place. The embassy/consulate will decide whether to issue you based on your real situation and documents you prepare instead of the place.
