why is the yellow river yellow?

Bob, this river flows across the loess plateau. The water erodes the loess plateau. As a result, earth and sands are brought into the river. That's why the river looks yellow. Before the Tang Dynasty, the river was still clean. It was called Da He, literally meaning Big River.
