About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

Can i come to Hainan on a one way ticket?

I am an american citizen wishing to do long term study in china. I was told by the university i can just come as a tourist, and they can help change my status while i am there. Thanks

It is possible to go to Hainan on a one way ticket.
You can ask the university to provide you an invitation letter for a tourist to you and then you can use that letter to apply the Tourist visa to go to Hainan. In this way, one way ticke is acceptable.
