UK citizens stop over for less than 72 hours

We are UK citizens and would like to stay one night in Beijing on our way to London. Do we need a visa for less than 72 hours coming on a direct flight from Sydney/Australia?

Based on your description, it is not needed for your transfering. Please do not worry. If you want to leave the airport, you just need to apply for a stay permit to leave.
