Hi, what is your purpose to visit China?
In general, you just need to take your valid passport, an application form with a recent taken photo and other documents (depending on your purpose to visit China) to apply directly at the local Chinese embassy. After submitting the documents, you will get a PICK UP FORM(Receipt), which can be used for collecting your passport after four working days.0

If so, the other documents here mean: a letter from the local travel agency or other travel organizer, Invitation Letter for Tourist from Chinese Tourist Bureau, your travel itinerary and copy of your bank statement (please bring the latest 3 months original one).1
