About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Regarding 72 hour visa free (U.S. Citizen here studying in Korea)

If I travel from Seoul --> Beijing/Shanghai (72 hours) --> Hong Kong ---> Seoul. Would this be allowed?

or

Seoul --> Beijing --> Seoul

The trip Seoul - Beijing or Shanghai - HK - Seoul is qualified for the 72-hour free transit. The trip "Seoul - Beijing - Seoul" is not qualified for the 72-hour free transit, since it is a round trip.
