Appropriate engagement gift for girl from Beijing from mother-in-law

My son is marrying a girl who is from Beijing originally. There seems to be an expectation that I will buy her and engagement gift which is not our tradition. What is appropriate and when do I give it?
Thanks,

Mary, it depends on what traditions are observed in the place where your daughter-in-law lives. In my place, the mother-in-law needn't give a gift to her daughter-in-law on the engagement day. However, she did give a red envelope containing some money. The more money she gives, the more her appreciation for her daughter-in-law is shown. However, the mother-in-law usually sends a gift at the wedding ceremony. Usually, jewelry is sent as a gift, for example, golden bracelet.
