12 hour stop over in Shanghai pudong airport

I am travelling to SH from France (I'm an Australian citizen), doing a 12hr stop over and getting a connecting flight with the same airline (Air China) back to Melbourne. My questions are; do I require a visa to leave the airport and get some sleep in hotel for a few hours? Also, do I need to collect my baggage and check itin again or will that be put straight on the connecting flight? Additionally, I am smoker - will be dying for one! Are there smoking rooms at the airport? Thanks so much for any information people can provide! Hayley x

1. No, you don't require a visa to leave the airport. But you should apply for the stay permit by using your passport and departure flight ticket. After that, you can leave the airport.
2. It's not necessary for you to collect the baggage and check in again. It will be put straight on the connecting flight. You should just finish transfer procedures.
3. Yes, there are many smoking rooms at the airport. They are always located near to public bathrooms. It's easy for you to find them.
