Why was it necessary to cross the Atlantic to find a "direct" route to China in the 14th century

To find a "direct" route to the east in the 14th century?

The Silk Road was cut off due to wars between Christians and Muslims which started with the Crusades in 1096. Muslims took control of the area between Europe and the Middle East and therefore cut off the trade route.
