72-hour Visa-free Transit for flying to Shanghai and then back

Hi, I am from the United States flying to Shanghai to meet a old friend for 70 hours then fly back to the US wanted to know is this covered by the 72 hour visa free transit

You will fly to Shanghai from USA and then back to USA?
If so, you cannot enjoy the 72-hour free transit policy. This policy are only available for those making international transfering in China with the different departure and destination country.
