residence permit in china

I am an australian citizen currently working in Australia. My wife and soon to be child live in Shenzhen. I want to obtain a residence permit, but do not need to work in China. How do I obtain such a permit, I currently have a six month multi-entry visa

You mean you have a multiple entry one, right? If so, you may need to apply a new one in Australia.
May I know which nationality does your wife have? If she is a Chinese citizen, you can apply a Q1 visa. Then after you entering China, you can change it to a resident permit within 30 days entering China to live in China for more than 180 days. If she is a foreinger, you can apply for a S1. Then you still need to change it a resident permit.

Hope it is helpful ~

thanks Rita
my wife is a chinese national/citizen.
I currently have a Q1 with multiple entries, expiring in January 2015. I also have residence registration.
I was assuming that i can apply for Temporary Resident visa here in China
