Travel on National Day

Hi, my son is studying in China and has been there for nearly a month, but still hasn't got his passport back from the University. (BUCT) He has his Student card and copy of his passport. Will he be safe, and legal going to Tianamen square tomorrow?

I know that we always have to tell to our supervisors( teacher) if we go outside the city where we live, and is legal to travel in China only with student card and copy of the passport.
