Taiwan-> Shanghai -> Taiwan can enjoy the free transit?

Hello, I was wondering if this is possible: I am a US Citizen and I am planning on visiting Taiwan. Is it possible to have this trip: San Francisco -> Taiwan -> Shanghai -> Taiwan -> SFO

I will only be in Shanghai for 2 days. However, I am unsure because 2 countries surrounding Shanghai is the same (Taiwan).

It is impossible to enjoy the 72-hour free transit in Shanghai, since you fly from Taiwan and then back to Taiwan, a round trip.
If you travel from San Francisco - Shanghai - Taiwan, you can enjoy the 72-hour free transit.

Hello,

Thank you for your help. I just realized that my trip from SFO has a 3 hour layover in taiwan before I reach Shanghai. In that case, would I still be eligible for the 72-hour visa free policy?
My trip is technically:
SFO -> Taiwan (3 hr layover, I do NOT plan to leave the airport) -> Shanghai -> Taiwan -> SFO

It is impossible to enjoy the policy, since Taiwan will be considered as the departure place, even though it is city for layover.
