Do I need a sperate visa for China if I already have one for HK?

I will vacation in Hongkong for about 2wks. I have it for hongkong already. However, I need to go mainland China for a 3 day trip to attend a conference. Do I need separate Chinese one? I am a US citizen.

You need a seperate single entry F type for your conference in China mainland. The F is suggested to be applied in advance at your local nearby consulate/embassy in advance with your valid passport, an application form with a recent taken photo and an invitation letter from the meeting.
