About:Top 8 Reasons Why Your China Visa Gets Rejected

Canadian citizens (family of 4) overnighting in Shanghai en route to VietNam.

We will be in Shanghai less than 24 hrs. en route to Vietnam and Cambodia. All airline tickets are in place. Do we need to arrange any visa documentation prior to departure from Canada? Upon arrival in Shanghai, do we need any application forms/ photos/ fees? We will be staying in a hotel overnight in Shanghai, but total time there less than 24 hrs.

Since you only stay in Shanghai for less than 24 hours, you do not need to apply anything in prior before you depart Canada.

You just need to apply for a stay permit at the immigration to leave your airport. It is a small paper with your basic information to fill and no fee is charged for it. Your onward ticket out of China and valid passports are needed to be shown when apply for this stay permit.
