Jack, the wall is made of rammed earth, stone and bricks. It says that the mixture of sticky rice and hydrated lime were used to fill the chinks between bricks.

They used soil and rocks and bricks and other things like that, but the interesting fact is that if you were a builder and you died, your body would have been built in the wall. I hope I answered your question.

Jack i think you you will be more pleased to hear is that it was their mortar. Also slacked lime is a mineral. You can make it with quick lime and water, when mixed with water, will probably explode. which is why they took limestone and cooked it, some how to evade the messy consequences of the other approach.

by the way if their bodies was built into the wall, it would be unstable and crumble. Their bodies instead would be shipped home, or in this case would be buried around it. Also scientists have not found bodies inside the wall, and most of the walls which held bones would probably crumbled now since there is only 1/3 left of the great wall of china.

Martin the ming dynasty was the only one which used slaked lime and sticky rice paste as a mortar. That is one of the reasons it is one of the only dynasty's walls still here today. The quin dynasty (pronounced chin) built with stones and rammed earth.(earth and dirt/big rocks put down between 2 poles and pushed, process repeated until full; poles taken away, process repeats with new section) Later in time all dynasties started to use bricks instead of rocks. So Jack it really depends on what dynasty, and Martin it don't just look the answer on google.
