Letter of invitation/ round trip ticket

We are a family of 4, and plan to travel through China for about 2 months. We plan to arrive by plane, but then hope to travel overland to Nepal, and we do not have a set itinerary. Therefore, we cannot provide a round trip ticket, nor a letter of invitation. Any advice on how to manage this difficulty? Many thanks!

There is no better methods. If you cannot provide the round trip tickets, you must prepare an invitation letter, otherwise, you cannot get a Tourist Type for visiting.
According to my experience, some China tour agency can provide visitors an invitation letter although the travelers do not order a tour from them. They only charge some fees. So you may try to look for some this kind of agency.
