Meeting in Beijing using 72-hour free transit

I am planning a meeting in Beijing at Tsinghua Univeristy - I have a UK passport and I am flying from Bahrain.
Can I make use of the 72 transit visa under the following conditions:
Fly BAH-HKG-Beijing (transit through airport not leaving)
Stay in Beijing 36 hours
Fly Beijing-HKG
Stay in HKG 24 hours leaving airport
Fly HKG-BAH
In other words, does HKG count as a third country in the transit?

HK is regarded as a third region instead of a third country.
But according to the policy, you may not qualified for the 72-hour free transit, since you will fly from HK and then fly back to HK.
