We are contemplating rail Shanghai to Beijing. What time prior to departure time should you arrive at station and how long before departure time can you board the train

You'd better arrive at the station one hour before departure. If you are going to pick up ticket there, make it two hours. Ticket check and boarding usually begins 30 minutes ahead of departure at starting stations and only a few minutes prior at intermediate stations.
