You will fly from Canada, right? But where do you fly to from Chengdu?
The 72-hour free transit is only to those who need to transfer in China, so you cannot enjoy it if you do not make transfer.

For your situation, you cannot enjoy this policy and you need to apply for a F type for your conference in China.

Thanks Lilian. Actually I will be flying to Chengdu from HKG and then leave Chengdu to Kuala Lumpur after finishing the conference. My stay in Chengdu will not exceed 48 hours... Will this itinerary allow me to take the free transit visa...Thanks again..Antonio

Antonio, you may make use of 72 hours free transit to attend your conference in Chengdu. But you should apply for a F type according to the law.
