About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

How can I apply for the transit visa?

Do I need to do anything in advance or I just arrive in China and show my passport and my flight ticket to the third country?

Generally speaking, you need to tell the airline that you want to enjoy the 72-hour free transit when you board the flight. Then upon arriving at a Chinese airport, you can just show your ticket to a third country and your passport to leave the airport.
If you head for Beijing airport, it is not needed to contact the airline in advance. You just need to show the tickets and passport when you reach the airport.
