what constitutes leaving china?

I was granted a double entry visa with each stay no more than 30 days. I will need to exit, but want to basically just continue traveling in china immediately thereafter. I know that going into HK or Macau for a few hours counts. what I'm wondering is if going to a different border, exiting china, but not entering the other country, and reentering china counts. for example, could I go to a Vietnam border without a Vietnamese visa, depart china, then turn right back around without entering Vietnam and go back into china?
thank you so much for your advice!

I am afraid that what you said doesn't work. You'd better do as other people do to exit mainland China and reenter again. Therefore, you won't have any trouble to continue your trip.
