Can I get visa well in advance of trip(6 months plus)? Or get it from India as a UK citizen?

I am a UK citizen and passport holder. I am travelling for 4 months in Africa, then going on to India for 1 month before going on to China for 1 month. I leave on 31/12/2014 for the first country on my travels and then my flight is booked to arrive in China on 30/05/2015 (and I'm booking a tour for when I'm there). Therefore I won't be in the UK to obtain the China L type that I need within 3 months of entering China so it will expire if I get it before I start my travels. Is there any way around this? Could I get a different type which will be valid for a longer period of time after its issued? I read somewhere that a multi-entry one is valid for 6 months after issue, so if I got this in December just before I leave this would still just about be valid for when I enter China but only just and it will be over 6 months after issue whilst I'm there and when I leave, so would this be acceptable? Alternatively, as I arrive in India a month before going to China, would I be able to obtain a visa for China from the Chinese Embassy in Delhi, India?
I'm not sure if this would be ok as I'm obviously not an Indian citizen? If this is possible though this would be ideal for me as I could visit the embassy in person on arrival in India and then the visa would be valid for when I arrive in China.
Advice on how to go about this would be much appreciated, I'm struggling to find information about this situation.

Laura, you can apply a L type from the CVASC branches in India. Usually, the applicants can submit their applications as early as three months. And it is not easy for you too apply for a multiple type one if you haven't been to China before. When you arrive in China with a single entry L type, you actually can apply for an extension at least 7 days before your current L type expires.

Thanks for this Lily. Can I confirm that I'd definately be able to get my visa in India then without living there? The CVSC website says you have to reside in that consulate to get one from there. It seems like a bit of a risk if I just turn up and it'll only be exactly one month before I go to China, I won't be able to go any earlier.

Laura, you can apply from the CVASC but I can't guarantee that you can apply successfully. The CVASC usually requires the applicants to provide their legal status in the third country. Resident permits for employment or study, visas or any other documents that prove you stay in India legally are ok. Anyway, you'd better to conact the CVASC branch to confirm this.
