can i apply early for a visa?

We live in Perth, and will leave Perth by car first January 2015 to join a cruise from Sydney on February 23, calling at three Chinese ports in March 2015. I believe we need Multiple Entry Six Month type. Can we get the visas in Perth in , say, November. This would be 4 months before our first entry, but all port visits are well within the six month timeline. Is this a problem?

Since you reach Chinese ports three times, you need to apply a multiple entry type with six monthes valid. You can try to apply it November, since you can enter China with the valid. BTW, it is suggested to apply in late November, so make sure that you have enough valid for it.
