Need to "de-register" a Z-visa?

My company opted to end my short-term assignment early (moving from a 6 month assignment to a 3 month assignment). My question is can I simply go home - I have no intention of coming back to China in the near term (certainly not before the original expiration)? The immigration agency is telling me I need to surrender my passport for 7 working days while my residency permit is "de-registered". Is this necessary - if I have to surrender my passport for 7 days this wreaks havoc with my travel scheduling.

You cannot go back home simply. You need to go to PSB and get your work permit cancelled as well as the residence permit and then go back home.

If you ask the immigration agency to do it for you, it is necassary to surrender your passport. Or you can choose to go to the Exit-Entry Adminstration Bureau with your boss to cancel them.
