About:Chinese Etiquette

Hosting a female Chinese exchange student for a whole year.

My family will be hosting a high school junior from China. We don't know where she is coming from, her name, or anything else about her besides her age and gender. My family is trying to plan ahead and get things ready for her, we live in Texas. All of us do not know any Chinese and have no idea how much she will know. I myself speak English and Japanese, how similar is the Japanese language to Chinese (I'm wondering how much I'll need to learn). What different customs do the Chinese have that we will need to learn? And finally, what is the best way to get her to feel comfortable in our home? She's going to be staying a very long time and we're very worried she might get homesick. Thank you for taking the time to read this. It is very appreciated!!

Sarah, Japanese and Chinese are different. You may learn some basic Chinese, such as Ni Hao, Huan Ying Ni, and Hen Gao Xin Ren Shi Ni. Anyway, your sincerity and hospitality will make feel her feel comfortable. If you can learn some Chinese dishes, she will be happier.
