Ways of getting to the top of the Potala Palace

Hi ,
I read that there are 1080 steps from the bottom to the top.
At this altitude and with my age (66 years) and health problems
there is no chance for me to go to the top using the steps.
Is there another way or possiblity to go up to the top?
Thanks and regards,
Pinchas , Israel

There is no cable car to the palace, so visitors must reach the top by climbing the steps. Considering your condition, I’m afraid you have to give up on it.

Hi Jane ,
Thanks a lot for information.
Using Google-earth , I notice a road leading almost to the top
from the other side . I wonder if there is an entry for visitors
from that side....
Kindest regards and shalom from Israel

I'm afraid not. According to the regulation, tourists have to go up to the palace by hiking the steps.

As you look at the palace from the front, on the left hand side, there is a road way to the side door, only a few dozen steps from where the car park to the side door. We got up that way. But you still have to pace yourselve; otherwise, you would be gasping for air and seeing stars, like I did.

They should build a cable car.
