About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Is the visa-free transit possible on both ways leaving home country and coming back home in one go?

E.g. leaving UK -- Beijing (1. visa-free transit) -- Hongkong -- Shanghai (2. visa-free transit) -- back home to UK
