Philip, I am afraid that you can't enjoy the 72 hours free transit in Shanghai because you fly from Japan and fly back to Japan too.

If I stay in Shanghai for less than 24 hrs, am I entitled to the visa-free transit?

I think so. However, you may contact the Shanghai Airport Immigration Inspection at 0086-21-51105100 to confirm this in case your plan is ruined.
