Residence permit expiring with no passport pages left

My residence permit will expire at the end of July. I am eligible for a new one, and I plan to apply for one. However, my current passport has no empty pages left. I can renew the passport here in Beijing, but it will take at least 20 business days. This means that by the time I get my new passport, my residence permit will be expired.

I am wondering: should I just apply now for the passport, even though it means I will have overstayed my residence permit when I got to apply for a new one? Or should I leave the country before it expires, get a new passport and visa, and then come back? Also, if I take the first option, what is the fine likely to be?

Thank you!

You are advised to visit local PSB first for direct answer. According to my experience, you should renew your passport first then extend your residence permit. You can explain this to the PSB officers if they accept short overstay or can they issue an extension first before you renew your passport.

to my experience you are in a tricky situation. if you leave the country and let your visa expired, you have to start from begining. if you overstay your resident permit they won't deliver the extension. I did remove on old not well sticked visa from a page, and PSB agreed to put the new visa on a page that was visibly used before. Especially old Hong kong business visa glue was not good and some of them tend to unglue with time.

I 100% agree with the other post you need to go to PSB asap, and check with them, don't try to trick them find somebody nice, get some chinese people to help you, and ask to be allowed a small overstay or unglue a page, or stick over an old one. But in PSB mind: you knew since one year that your passport was coming to end, why didn't you make you move before, try to have a smart answer to that, not like I forget,
