Can I use my U.S. driver license as ID to travel in China?

I want to do some travel while my passport is handled in for visa process. Can I use my US driver license as ID to travel in China?

Is your passport in the Exit-Entry Adminstration Office?
If so, you can hold the receipt the office give to you to travel in China.
