I am guessing I will need to photocopy my bank statements. how much money is needed to prove I can support myself in China for one year.

Hi, there is no such requirements acutally if you want to apply for short term tourist L. But if you need one year L, you may need to prepare for it in advance, otherwise, you may need an invitation letter from China. As I know, the rate of financial support is at least USD 100 per day. You can also contact the embassy or consulate for more details.
