About:China Tourist Visa

Is a visa required if entering mainland china and staying a night or 2 only?

I am a US citizen and participating in the abroad studies program in HK. I would like to visit mainland China a day or two during my visit. Is it required to enter mainland for the short stay or will a passport be sufficient?

You have to apply for a Chinese tourist L in advance for this visit. But there is an option for you to stay in some cities freely for 3 days if you make your return trip from HK to USA via China, through following cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shenyang or Dalian.
