About:Han Dynasty

Did Xiang Yu give Liu Bang the title, King of Han ?

I read one article that said Xiang Yu split the Qin into several pieces/states/áreas and named his then friend Liu Bang to be head of one of them. Is there any clue in that as to where ¨Han¨ came from ?

Yes, Xiang Yu gives Liu Bang the title King of Han. After that, Liu Bang settles down in Hanzhong. Liu Bang, King of Han, finally defeated Xiang Yu and established the Han Dynasty.

Thank you Mary. Do you have any idea where Xiang Yu got the idea of Han from ? Was it the name of a city, place, region before Xiang conquered Qin territory or did he name it and those other areas he conquered?

The name "King of Han" is come from the place called Hanzhong where is Liu Bang's basr. "Hanzhong" means the middle of "Han" in Chinese

Thank you Lai. Hanzhong suggests a place in the middle of a large area. So it may have been called that after Liu Bang became Emperor of China - the Han world, and so Liang Yu might have originated the name Han for a place and then later it became known as the middle or beginning point of the Empire. Do you think that is possible or was the place called Han to begin with and if so, was that Liu Bang´s birthplace ? Or what was he doing there ? It´s a lot of questions but I can´t find anything about it in my books.
