About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hi, can you please help clarify if the 72 hour rule applies to this itinerary?

LAX-NRT-PEK June 14/15 (just a transfer in Tokyo airport)
PEK-NRT June 18 (depart less than 72 hours from entry), stay in Tokyo for several days before returning to the states

Does the transfer in Tokyo act as my entry location, or is it LAX?

No, this free transit does not applies to this itinerary because the inbound flight has a transfer in Tokyo.
