Do I need a Visa for a short stay?

I'm traveling to Shanghai from California and will only be there 2-3 days, to give a talk at a professional conference.

Yes, it is required if you will return to United States from Shanghai. But if you make your stay in Shanghai as a transit on your way to a third country, for example, to Japan, you can enjoy free stay for 72 hours.
