About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

this probably isn't allowed...

I'd like to visit Shanghai en route to Tokyo but I am coming from Hawaii. So, my flight stops in Narita to connect to Shanghai. If I don't clear Japanese customs, would this make the USA my originating country and allow me to transit to Tokyo through Shanghai and qualify for the visa? I'm Canadian.

No, you need to apply for a Chinese visa in advance for this trip. The free transit does not allow this.
