Question, can I mail my application and be given a date to return and pick up my Visa in person?

Ok I have found that i need to apply for it in Chicago given i live in Michigan. I understand I have to submit an application and then i will be given a return date to come pick it up. I was planning on driving this 8 hour round trip to Chicago. Basically is there a way i can do this by making one trip to Chicago instead of 2?
