Which type do I need, tourist L or Transit G

I am going to Beijing for several nights (longer than 72 hours - 3 nights, 4 days) on the way to Japan. However, I want to leave the airport, stay in a hotel and look around Beijing. I would prefer it if I could get a transit G type, as I would not have to book my hotel yet before I make my application.

Can I go for either or should I go for one over the other?

You can apply for transit G type showing your passport and an onward air ticket.
