About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Does round trip apply to different airports in the same country?

If I fly out of one airport in S. Korea into Beijing, and fly back to a different airport in S. Korea, does this count as round trip travel? Would I still be able to use the 72-hour visa free transit rule?

No, this is not allowed. This indicates that you have to fly via China to a third country.
