About:Chinese Embassies and Consulates

If a person flies into Hong Kong, stays in a hotel in Hong Kong and takes the ferry to Shenzen for the day, is a VISA required?

Also, if a person has a Chinese one that does not expire until the end of the year, does he need to provide any other paperwork to enter China?

Yes, Americans are not eligible for VOA in PRC. If you still have a valid Chinese type visa, you can enter Shenzhen without applying for a new one.
