Hi, your son is only able to apply for a S1 or S2 type in this case. In my opinion, it is ok for him to get one with 180 days as the duration of stay. Anyway, you can contact Chinese embassy directly for details.

S type is for family visit, which is issued to applicants who visit the family working or studying in China. So I am afraid he is only able to apply for tourist L type if you have Q1.
