How can I organize a Silk Road Tour from Xian?

A group of 6-8 of us retirees from Kuala Lumpur would like to take a trip of the Silk Road in October 2014. We plan to fly to Chengdu and stay 2 nights before travelling to XA where we also stay 2 nights. We will then begin our Silk Road adventure. Note that we are retirees and are budget travellers. We have the following questions:

1. Is October the right time for going on a Silk Road trip?
2. How many days are required for the whole travel?
3. Can the tour be organized in XA and how much does it cost per person, relating to (2) above?
4. Apart from the Chinese Visa, do we need special travel documents for the trip?
5. Will the trip be too strenuous for a 60 or 70 year old?
6. Apart from flying, is there any high speed train from Chengdu to XA and how long is the journey?
7. How much is the train fare, one-way and two-way?

Thank you for your advice and assistance.

1. Yes, it is a good timing to have a trip on the Silk Road in Oct.
2. To fully enjoy the adventure, at least ten days are needed! As it lasts so long, you are highly recommended to join a tour for a perfect trip!
3. Yes, it can be arranged in XA. I joined such an itinerary of Travel China Guide. We had 5 people in a group and paid around 1,800USD per person! It is a little expensive, but worth it! If you are interested, their email address is tourstravelchinaguide.com
4. No other special documents are needed apart from the visa.
5. No, there is no high-speed train service for the trip yet. The normal express train takes around 15h.
6. It costs CNY98-112 per person for a hard seat, CNY208-315 per person for a sleeper!

Hope all are clear!

Oops, I didn't answer your question no. 5. Generally, it is not that harsh to travel on the road, because the transportation between the major destinations are convenient and also the travel agency would provide a good transfer service. Don't worry!
