About:Baggage Allowance for Chinese Domestic Flights

Do I need to take out checked in baggage at point of entry while travelling through China?

I am taking sfo-shanghai-kunming-ktm and want to check my luggage all the way to ktm(nepal). I don't plan to go outside of either shanghai/kunming transit areas, but do I still need to take out my luggage at those transit points and go through immigration with luggage due to domestic transfer? please help clarify.

If you fly with the same airline, you usually needn’t take out your luggage and go through the immigration again. However, you should do it if the transit points require you to go through their procedure. If you fly with several airlines, you usually need to check your luggage and go through the immigration.

Just for reference! I think you should call Shanghai and Kunming Airports and your airlines.
Shanghai airport: (86)021-96990
Kunming airport: (86)0871-96566

Hi Mandy,

Thanks for the answer but your answer didn't really help. I know in most places if you are in transit and travelling with one airlines, you could stay in trasit without having to haul your luggage or go through immigration. But I was not sure about China having conflicting reports online, thus wanted some definite answers from people who are in the same scenario as me.
I have tried calling the respective airport/airlines from USA but am put on hold for long time, thus my search brought me here. If you know real experience or fact about the transit please let me know.
Regards,
Manish
